The Independence Trail is a beautiful wheelchair accessible trail off of Highway 49 in Northern California. If you are ever in the Nevada City, Grass Valley area, the Independence Trail is a must for outdoor enthusiasts. This trail hovers above the South Fork of the Yuba River and is especially beautiful in the spring when the wild flowers are in full bloom. The trail follows an old water canal that dates back to the 1800’s and played a large part in California Gold Rush history. It is the first wilderness trail ever built in the United States that was specifically designed for wheelchair access. There are picnic areas, accessible bathrooms, as well as access for fishing.

Which way should we go?

Which way should we go? At the trail entrance on Highway 49 you can head east, up the South Fork of the Yuba River canyon, or west.

Japanese are coming to visit...

In 2001, the MAZDA Challenge Tour 2001 in California visited the Independence Trail. Highway 49 is a beautiful and scenic drive that takes you through mining towns and scenery from the Gold Rush.

Meeting with map...

After checking out the trail map we decided to head west towards Rush Creek.

On the trail

The Independence Trail uses berms and rebuilt flumes that were originally used for mining and irrigation.

What a beautiful day for a hike.

What an awesome view of the South Fork of the Yuba River!

The Nevada City Trail Sign

The main sign of the trail...

It was a hot day in July so we took a break and signed the trails guest book.
